vedanta

VIDHA VEDHU is TO KNOW IN SANSKRIT. TO KNOW WHAT? IS THE NEXT QUERY.WELL ALL THE MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE CAN BE KNOWN  IF WE TAKE EFFORTS. SAY  U ARE EXPERT IN  MATHS U MIGHT BE ABLE TO SOLVE EASIER THAN ME HOWEVER IF I TAKE TO LEARN I CAN BECOME AN EXPERT,  over  a period of time. which means material  knowledge can be known if i struggle  for a period of time. but knowledge about self is the most difficult one. our vedas talks about self which is nothing but conscience which is the basis of all knowledge. therefore knowing about the self everything ts known as well. as all the subjects are based on conscience alone. then antha means end. since the knowledge about atman comes in the latter portion of vedas. its called vedanta. karma kanda which is earlier portion is also talked  about by the vedas. however jnyana  kanda that deals with knowledge is coming after the description of karmakanda. therefore it is aptly called vedanta.

  1. Another perspective on vedanta: Usually conclusions convey the essence of an article/treatise in a succinct way. Similarly, ved-anta, is the conclusions (anta = end) of the vedas. And these succinct conclusions are in the form of formulas or sutras. Just like it takes an expert to uncover the deep meanings of a mathematical formula, similarly the vedanta sutras require expertise to understand deep/subtle truths.

  2. thanks for the comments. i have just given a overview meaning of vedanta. i am aware that vedanta involves a deep inquiry however sutras are toyally different. say brahmasutra bashya here u can come across sutra a capsulated sentence say athatho brahma jignyasa hereafter one who wants to know brahman. this involves an expert commentary which can run into nearly 12 pages..

  3. This is what I read regarding vendata:

Vedanta is a systematic knowledge which explains the meaning and purpose of our existence in the world.

Vedanta is made up of two words Veda and Anta.
According to one meaning of the word Anta, Vedanta means the physical end of our scriptures. So the Upanishads which appear at the end of the Vedas make up Vedanta.
But another meaning of Anta is knowledge or vision. So we can also interpret it as the vision of the Vedas.

Vedanta is a knowledge that is founded on its own authority. It trains us to think for ourselves, analyse, investigate and realize the quintessence of life. It ultimately leads us to spiritual enlightenment. Hence we can say that it is universally applicable to all, at all times, under all situations. That is the main reason why we are interested in knowing about it.

What a man tries to do in and through all actions, is to seek happiness and avoid unhappiness. Vedanta is bold enough to say that the only reason why there is life in the universe, or the only thing that sustains the universe, is the basic urge in the heart of every living being of seeking happiness (sukha prapthi) and avoiding unhappiness (dukha nivruthi). Any action, ancient or modern, whether it is performed by the rich or poor, is prompted by one of these two motives. Hence an endeavour to attain happiness is essentially what we mean by life.

What relevance do the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita have in our lives? They are always applicable because they deal with the fundamental desire of human beings, that is, gaining happiness and avoiding unhappiness. As Vedanta addresses itself to this fundamental problem it becomes relevant even today.
